DIY Drive-In Movie Cars for Kids (Easy Craft for Home Movie Nights!)
Remember the excitement of pulling into an old-school drive-in movie theater? Now your littles can experience that same joy β right at home! With just a few simple craft supplies and a cardboard box, you can create the cutest DIY drive-in cars that make movie night feel extra special.
What Youβll Need
Cardboard boxes large enough for kids to sit in
Black paper plates (for wheels)
Construction paper
Paint in your choice of βcar colorβ
Extra colors for taillights and headlights
Glue or hot glue
Marker or paint pen for names
How to Make DIY Drive-In Movie Cars
Turn ordinary cardboard boxes into adorable mini-cars your kids can βdriveβ while watching their favorite movie! This project is quick, budget-friendly, and so fun for themed movie nights or birthday parties.
1. Paint the Boxes
Paint each box completely and let it dry. This will be the body of your βcar,β so choose bold, fun colors!
2. Add the Wheels
Glue black paper plates to both sides of the box to create wheels. You can double-layer them for a more 3D look if you want extra flair.
3. Create Taillights & Headlights
Cut simple shapes out of construction paper.
Use contrasting colors so they pop against the car color.
Glue taillights on the back.
Glue headlights and a small βgrillβ to the front.
4. Make a Personalized License Plate
Cut a rectangle from construction paper, write your childβs name on it, and glue it to the back of the car. This step is always a kid favorite!
And thatβs it β their very own drive-in movie car, made with just a few supplies and tons of imagination.
Movie Night Setup Tips
I use a large white sheet as my screen and connect my iPhone to a projector. For sound, my Bose speaker works perfectly and fills the room or backyard.
To make the night even more magical:
Set Up a Mini Concession Stand
Include:
πΏ Popcorn
π¬ Candy
π₯€ Juice boxes or sodas
ποΈ A printable βticket boothβ sign for extra fun
Kids can βdriveβ up, grab a snack, and settle in for the show!
Have Fun!
This DIY craft turns an ordinary movie night into an unforgettable memory. If you try it, tag me β I love seeing your creations!

I get moving/packing boxes from Home Depot that work great!
Annika
Thanks. Went yesterday, not to be annoying but do you remember what size?

Not annoying at all. I would not spend a lot of money on these. If you can go to your local grocer that has boxes veggies come in work great! Here is a link to another mom that made these that may help. https://www.notjustahousewife.net/cardboard-cars-for-a-homemade-drive-in-theater/
