How to Make DIY Drive-In Movie Cars

Turn ordinary cardboard boxes into adorable mini-cars your kids can “drive” while watching their favorite movie! This project is quick, budget-friendly, and so fun for themed movie nights or birthday parties.

1. Paint the Boxes

Paint each box completely and let it dry. This will be the body of your “car,” so choose bold, fun colors!

2. Add the Wheels

Glue black paper plates to both sides of the box to create wheels. You can double-layer them for a more 3D look if you want extra flair.

3. Create Taillights & Headlights

Cut simple shapes out of construction paper.

  • Use contrasting colors so they pop against the car color.

  • Glue taillights on the back.

  • Glue headlights and a small “grill” to the front.

4. Make a Personalized License Plate

Cut a rectangle from construction paper, write your child’s name on it, and glue it to the back of the car. This step is always a kid favorite!

And that’s it — their very own drive-in movie car, made with just a few supplies and tons of imagination.

Movie Night Setup Tips

I use a large white sheet as my screen and connect my iPhone to a projector. For sound, my Bose speaker works perfectly and fills the room or backyard.

To make the night even more magical:

Set Up a Mini Concession Stand

Include:
🍿 Popcorn
🍬 Candy
🥤 Juice boxes or sodas
🎟️ A printable “ticket booth” sign for extra fun

Kids can “drive” up, grab a snack, and settle in for the show!
