Magical Southern Christmas Getaways: Charleston, Savannah & St. Augustine
There’s something about Southern Christmas getaways that makes me want to pack a bag, grab a hot chocolate, and disappear for a long weekend. Maybe it’s the historic homes covered in garland, the little shops decorated for the holidays, or the fact that we can enjoy Christmas lights without worrying about digging our cars out of three feet of snow.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of a picture-perfect white Christmas. Snow-covered rooftops, cozy fireplaces, and all that Hallmark movie nonsense sound wonderful. Right up until I have to scrape ice off a windshield. Then I’m perfectly happy celebrating Christmas somewhere a little warmer.
Living in Georgia has its advantages, especially when it comes to weekend getaways. We’re within driving distance of some pretty incredible destinations, and three Southern cities have caught my attention for the 2026 Christmas season: Charleston, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; and St. Augustine, Florida.
All three have beautiful historic districts, plenty of holiday festivities, and enough restaurants, shops, and attractions to turn a quick Christmas outing into a full weekend away. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family trip with the kids, or just need a little break from the endless holiday to-do list, these destinations deserve a spot on your radar.
Christmas in Charleston, South Carolina
Charleston is one of those cities that doesn’t need much help looking beautiful. Between the colorful historic homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and incredible food, it already has plenty going for it. Add Christmas decorations, twinkling lights, and a few holiday markets, and you’ve got a pretty good excuse to book a weekend away.
And if you enjoy shopping for Christmas gifts that don’t come from a big-box store, Charleston has a couple of interesting options.

Charleston’s Holiday Markets
The Charleston Holiday Markets return to Marion Square on December 5, 6, 12, 13, and 19, 2026. Expect local vendors, seasonal decorations, fresh produce, and plenty of opportunities to pick up gifts while supporting small businesses.
For something a little different, there’s also CHRISTkindlmarkt Charleston, a German-inspired Christmas market in Awendaw, just outside the city. The market features traditional German decorations, handcrafted gifts, food, and music.
The 2026 market takes place December 4–6 and December 11–13, with daytime family-friendly sessions and evening markets reserved for adults. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and visitors park at a designated location before taking a shuttle to the market.
Honestly, an adults-only Christmas market sounds like a pretty fabulous date night to me.
Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island
One of Charleston’s biggest holiday attractions is the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park, running November 13 through December 31, 2026.
We’re talking millions of lights and more than 750 illuminated displays, along with holiday shopping, a festival train, marshmallow roasting, and visits with Santa.
This is the kind of Christmas outing I’d build an evening around rather than trying to squeeze it in between dinner reservations. Tickets are priced by vehicle, and purchasing ahead of time is a good idea, especially on popular December weekends.
Where to Stay in Charleston for Christmas
If you’re making a weekend out of it, I’d look for a hotel in Charleston’s Historic District. Staying downtown puts you close to restaurants, shopping, and those beautiful old streets that make Charleston so charming.
For a romantic weekend, a historic inn or boutique hotel would be my first choice. Families might prefer a larger hotel room or vacation rental, especially if everyone needs a little breathing room after a long day of Christmas festivities.
Just remember that James Island and the Awendaw Christmas market aren’t right in the middle of downtown Charleston, so you’ll need to plan transportation accordingly.
Christmas in Savannah, Georgia
Savannah might be one of my favorite choices for a Southern Christmas getaway, and a big reason is its Christmas market.
If you’ve ever dreamed of wandering through a European-style Christmas market, sipping something warm, browsing little wooden vendor stalls, and listening to Christmas music, Savannah offers a taste of that experience without requiring a passport.
And you get Savannah’s beautiful historic architecture, riverfront, and oak-lined streets as a bonus.

Savannah Christmas Market at Plant Riverside District
The Savannah Christmas Market returns to Plant Riverside District from November 19, 2026, through January 3, 2027.
This isn’t just a handful of vendors selling ornaments. The market features more than 50 booths with handcrafted gifts, holiday decorations, seasonal treats, and plenty of Christmas atmosphere.
There are also live performances, children’s activities, visits with Santa, a Festival of Trees, and a gingerbread display.
Admission to the market is free, which is always a welcome surprise during a season when it feels like everything costs money.
I’d plan to visit in the late afternoon and stay into the evening when the lights really start showing off. Grab something warm to drink, wander the market, and enjoy the riverfront without feeling like you have to rush from one attraction to another.
Make a Weekend of Savannah
The Christmas market may be the main attraction, but Savannah has enough going on to fill an entire weekend.
Spend some time wandering the Historic District, visit the shops along River Street, explore City Market, and enjoy a good Southern meal. If the weather cooperates, a walk through Forsyth Park is always a lovely way to spend part of the day.
Savannah is also a great destination for couples who want a romantic weekend without a packed itinerary. Sometimes a beautiful hotel, a good dinner, and a little wandering are all you need.
Where to Stay in Savannah for Christmas
For this trip, I’d focus on accommodations around River Street or the Historic District.
Staying near Plant Riverside District would make visiting the Christmas market especially convenient. You could enjoy the festivities, walk back to your hotel, and skip the hassle of finding parking again.
Savannah also has plenty of historic inns and vacation rentals if you’d rather stay somewhere with a little more character.
And because the market runs into early January, you don’t necessarily have to squeeze this getaway into an already packed December calendar.
Christmas in St. Augustine, Florida
If Charleston has the historic charm and Savannah has the Christmas market, St. Augustine has the lights.
And not just a few strings of lights hanging from the trees.
Every year, St. Augustine transforms its historic downtown into a Christmas wonderland for its famous Nights of Lights celebration.
The 2026–2027 season begins November 21, 2026, and continues through January 18, 2027, giving visitors nearly two months to experience the festivities.
That extended schedule is a big advantage for families who can’t squeeze another trip into December.

St. Augustine Nights of Lights
During Nights of Lights, millions of tiny white lights illuminate the historic buildings, streets, trees, restaurants, and shops throughout downtown St. Augustine.
The Plaza de la Constitución is one of the main gathering spots, but the beauty of this event is that you can experience much of it simply by walking around the historic district.
And if walking isn’t your thing, or you’ve got little ones who aren’t particularly interested in wandering for hours, there are plenty of other ways to see the lights.
Holiday trolley tours, carriage rides, and boat cruises offer different perspectives of the illuminated city. Some tours include music, hot chocolate, or other seasonal touches.
Personally, I think seeing the Christmas lights from the water sounds pretty wonderful.
The lights themselves are free to enjoy on foot, while organized tours require separate tickets. Popular tours can sell out, so I’d make reservations before arriving rather than assuming you’ll find something available that evening.
More Than Just Christmas Lights
One of the things I like about St. Augustine as a getaway destination is that there’s plenty to do during the day, too.
You can explore the historic streets, visit Castillo de San Marcos, browse the shops along St. George Street, or head toward the coast if you’re craving a little beach time.
And let’s be serious, enjoying Christmas decorations one evening and walking along the beach the next morning sounds like a pretty good holiday combination.
For families, this is an especially appealing option because you’re not relying on a single attraction to entertain everyone for an entire weekend.
Where to Stay in St. Augustine for Christmas
I’d look for accommodations in or near the Historic District if Nights of Lights is the main reason for your visit.
Being able to walk to restaurants and holiday attractions is a huge plus, especially when downtown gets busy during the Christmas season.
Couples might enjoy one of St. Augustine’s historic bed-and-breakfasts, while families could consider a hotel with a pool or a vacation rental with more space.
If you prefer staying near the beach, that’s an option too. Just plan for the drive and parking when heading downtown for the lights.
Which Southern Christmas Getaway Should You Choose?
Honestly, I don’t think there’s a bad choice among these three. It really depends on what kind of Christmas experience you’re looking for.
Choose Charleston if you love historic neighborhoods, wonderful restaurants, Christmas shopping, and a mix of holiday events. It’s especially appealing for couples planning a festive weekend away.
Choose Savannah if a traditional Christmas market is at the top of your wish list. The riverfront setting, holiday vendors, and walkable Historic District make it an easy choice for a relaxed Christmas getaway.
Choose St. Augustine if Christmas lights are your thing. Between the historic downtown, holiday tours, and nearby beaches, it’s a wonderful option for families and couples alike.
And here’s one more thing worth considering: You don’t have to visit any of these destinations on Christmas itself.
In fact, I’d probably avoid the busiest holiday weekends if my schedule allowed it. Early December can be a lovely time to travel, and Savannah and St. Augustine both offer festivities that extend beyond Christmas Day.
A Little Christmas Magic Without Going Too Far
As much as I love planning a big vacation, there’s something to be said for a simple weekend getaway. No complicated itinerary, no racing through an airport, and no feeling like you need another vacation to recover from the one you just took.
Sometimes all you need is a charming town, a comfortable place to stay, a good meal, and a few thousand Christmas lights.
Charleston, Savannah, and St. Augustine each offer their own version of Southern Christmas magic, and I’d happily put any of them on my holiday travel list.
So if the holiday season is already starting to feel a little overwhelming, maybe this is your sign to trade one weekend of errands and Christmas shopping for something a little more memorable.
The laundry will still be there when you get home. Unfortunately.
